INDIANA BOATING LAWS AND REGULATIONS

In addition to the laws about Indiana boating license requirements, there are laws and regulations in place that pertain to boating safety equipment, personal floatation devices, navigation aids, and regulatory zones. Before you plan your first boating trip, make sure you know all of the safe boating basics.

IT’S NOT A FEE, IT’S A CONTRIBUTION

Your boat registration serves as documentation to prove that you are the rightful owner of a vessel. There are registration fees that you will need to pay when you register your boat; however, these fees are used by the state to help sustain our natural resources and promote responsible boating.

INDIANA BOAT REGISTRATION INFORMATION

  • All motorboats used on Indiana waterways must be registered and display valid watercraft decals to operate in the state unless otherwise exempt.
  • When registering your watercraft for the first time you will pay the applicable registration fee, a Lake and River Enhancement Fee, and excise tax.
  • Vessels previously registered in other states must display Indiana watercraft decals after 22 days of being brought into the state.
